I've decided to celebrate Colorado's co-distinction as the skinniest state AND the largest beer producer in the nation with a semi-solid margarita made of tequila, lard, buttermilk, beer and sugar. Put down your bikes, shed your crampons, renounce your gym memberships and and join me, Colorado. Join me.

Phew...Dodged it Again http://www.sweetandbitter.com/inside/archives/2008/07/phewdodged_it_a.html PKN+Volume+2.JPG

The second installation of Pecha Kucha is scheduled for Monday, July 14th at the Buntport. I'll be flying back from Massachusetts that night, so am sad to say I'll miss it. Less sad to say I won't be presenting again, but...alas...this fear of public speaking thing I've had since delivering a speech at my high school graduation seems to be here to stay. I can handle about a five-person crowd but anything over that and I stop breathing, which I've read can be harmful.

Bathing Beauties http://www.sweetandbitter.com/inside/archives/2008/06/bathing_beautie.html I told you I'd keep you up to date about the "CABIN BATHROOM RENOVATION" of 2008, and a girl of my word I am. (Also, a girl of my girdle but that's another post entirely.) Ahhhhhh...well, lessee. Looking back to...um...last Wednesday, I remember that I started the process as every good process should start - with an online shopping escapade. First step, hardest step: shower curtain. And while it may have been a bit tough to find a cost-effective one that didn't have flounces or see-through crossword puzzles or cartoon characters, it's still a lot easier to start with this piece and work from there than, say, starting with paint colors and having to play Harriet the Spy to get coordinating bath linens. Let the curtain be your guide!

So, after a few moments of looking through the dreadful/boring options, I decided I wanted a kid-friendly, cabin-appropriate, nature-appreciative theme. Yeah, it was between that and a rococo, Louis XIV, bejeweled bidet handle kind of vibe. Potato, potahto.

Behold what alighted:

marimekko.gif
Marimekko Kaiku Shower Curtain from Finn Style.
(A look previously drooled over here.)

The next step was way easy, finding a small bath mat that matched the curtain:

pbrug.jpg
Pottery Barn Classic Bath Rug in Clover Green. (That's the one on the far bottom right. I've got quite the eye for color, no?)

And then, it was on to the walls. I think we'll probably go for white or cream and let the curtain be the star, but I still wanted to add something on them to bring some pattern to that side of the room. And wallpapering is not - nor ever will be - my renovation forte. Even after my mom recommended I just drink Mai Tais during the application, which apparently is how she and my Nana redid vast portions of our house. Mai Tais? Check. Wallpaper paste and pattern aligning frustration? Pass.

So, I settled on some sweet little bird wall graphics:

flyawaywallgraphic.jpg
Fly Away Wall Graphic in Ash from Etsy seller ellynelly (Note: the "Ash" is a dark gray. Again, color + me = fistpound.)

These also work to alleviate my bird-guilt over housing, feeding and caring for a multi-fanged killer. Win-win.

Who You Calling a Dumbbell? http://www.sweetandbitter.com/inside/archives/2008/06/who_you_calling.html SportBlock-CU.jpg At last, I've found an adjustable, easily-stored and affordable set of dumbbells. I loathe lifting weights at the gym. Something about touching all those germy, sweaty, ne'er cleaned handles sets my guts a-roiling. So this (admittedly casual) search has been in the foreback of my mind for ages. And now my mind may rest. My ass and lats on the other hand? They'll be pumping.

Sportblock (3-24 lbs.), $129 plus $29 shipping

Voice Recognition http://www.sweetandbitter.com/inside/archives/2008/06/voice_recogniti.html I subscribe to a free service called CallWave that saves you the minutes charges of calling to your voicemail by setting up your voicemail through your phone number. And since you're obvs in your network, it's a free call. You can also listen to and archive the messages online. The other bonuses of CallWave, if you want to call them that, is that they email and text you a written version of the message. This leads to some hilarious interpretations, but generally you can get the jist of the message. Like, take, the below. A message I just got from my Dad. Relevant portions bolded:

"..how are you we're fine beautiful day I went back to the government tell the just well after pulling over the whole, wine rack on top of me last night mountain broke a bottle of flowers and got a few bruises, but apparently survive and I was telling the drummer colleges why this unusual bruise on my leg and she says, how old are you so listen. I discovered that I wrist amount has 2 versions of our town or my town whatever is you know that great song she wrote, fantastic song, on you to and one of them is was sitting around with Mary Black and name is Lou Harrison someone's living room and doing it and the other is her just singing it and the sound quality on her just individual thing is so wonderful plus they print the words out and as you know as you probably know, the worse or absolutely incredible, so epp I'm it's just like there's so many, great things don't you too and you just kind of discover, you know by following a trail and I hadn't. I've got an Irish demand CD, but it doesn't - I don't think have our town on it and somewhat if you would do me a favor, if you don't know that's they'll listen to it so we can talk about it and if you do go listen to it you've big old earlier, OK now I'm going to go over and play with my cats so I have to prioritize and get off the phone with humans, love you oh here's real good news in case Matt hadn't told you Donnie was accepted it sent Johnson Annapolis so is he said now I don't have to apply that 12 or 15 schools make sure I get in one you know I can apply to the you know 5 or so that I'm really interested in and relax you know, so that was great news, love you so much really like."

So, you know...the gist.

The Newest Addition http://www.sweetandbitter.com/inside/archives/2008/06/the_newest_addi.html 100_0971.JPG

This is Promises, a Trakehner colt born just last week to Preglestar. He's been bringing my ma a lot of joy while she's sidelined with a broken (ouch!) rib (ouch!) and is, by all accounts, both an officer and a gentleman. As well as a full brother to her yearling colt Pharaoh.*

*All the Trakhehner babies have to have names beginning with the first letter of the dam's name. This is all well and good when it's "P" but was a bit tougher when the mare Upstart was pumping 'em out. The suggestion "Umbilicus" was rejected more times than I care to count.

My Friend is Physically Fit http://www.sweetandbitter.com/inside/archives/2008/06/my_friend_is_ph.html Kirsten just e-mailed me to say she'll be lurking around my house this September following RUNNING THE FOLLOWING:

The Colorado Relay Classic is a 24-hour+ 170-mile team relay race, and is Colorado's Premier Team Relay designed for athletes of all abilities. The 2008 Colorado Relay Classic will be held on September 12-13, 2008, going from Georgetown to Carbondale, Colorado. Runners leave from Georgetown between 6am and 12noon.

I just had one of those marathony shitsplosions just thinking about it. Especially the "athletes of all abilities" detail. And now I have to go change. That's all.
